The Project

Duration: 1 February 2023 – 31 January 2026

JuLIA official website: https://www.julia-project.eu/

“JuLIA” (Justice, Fundamental Rights and Artificial Intelligence) is a European research project co-funded by the European Commission and implemented by a Consortium of eleven European partners led by Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Since the compatibility of automated decision-making (ADM) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) with fundamental rights is among the most crucial issues in the current technological revolution, JuLIA analyzes the use of AI in decision-making by courts, public administrations, and private agents, such as businesses, healthcare professionals and others, as well as its impact on health and other fundamental rights.

Coordinating Partner: Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Spain)

Partners: University of Trento (Italy), University of Versailles Saint Quentin-en-Yvelines (France), Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (Netherlands), Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal), Instytut nauk Prawnych Polskiej Akademii Nauk (Poland), Consejo General del Poder Judicial (Spain), LIBRe Foundation (Bulgaria), Studiecentrum Rechtpleging (Netherlands), Fondazione Bruno Kessler (Italy), Scuola Superiore della Magistratura (Italy)

Objectives

JuLIA aims at investigating the impact of the use of ADM and AI by courts and other public and private institutions on fundamental rights. In pursuing this goal, the project is developed with an interdisciplinary approach that embraces different legal areas impacted by AI: justice, protection of health, public administration, consumer markets, data protection.

Implementation

The objectives of the project are pursued by developing tools for judicial training, including scientific handbooks and papers addressed to judges in the context of continuous training
and materials for building databases, e-learning modules, and digital resources.
